Hello from the Cabin — Late July

We’re finally putting Solar & Spruce online in late July — not because we have it all figured out, but because writing things down has already saved us a season of repeating the same mistakes.

Why we’re starting the site

This site is our notebook made public. We’ll post guides when we have something practical to walk through, and use the blog for updates like this — what we’ve been doing, what broke, what we’d try again.

We’re still hooked up to the grid. That isn’t a secret or a temporary embarrassment. Self-sufficiency, for us, is a direction: grow more of what we eat, understand our power and water, fix what we can, and keep learning how to lean on the utility a little less each season. If you’re on a similar path — curious, a bit overwhelmed, not interested in purity tests — you’re who we had in mind.

How we got to this cabin

Neither of us grew up on a homestead. We moved out here because we wanted a quieter life closer to the trees — spruce and birch, a real cabin with room to work, and enough land that mistakes have space to happen without a HOA committee weighing in.

We learned most of what we know the hard way. Blown fuses. A water line that froze solid on a morning we really needed coffee. Gardens that looked ambitious in May and apologetic by August. None of that made us experts. It made us people who write things down so the next season costs a little less tuition.

What we’ve already done on the property

Peter has spent a lot of time on the systems side — solar on the roof and a ground array we can actually reach, wiring that doesn’t leave us guessing when something trips, tools that earn a permanent spot instead of a second trip to town. We’re still on the grid; the solar is how we practice using less of it and understanding what the household really draws.

I’ve been in the garden beds this season — tomatoes, greens, herbs, the usual late-July mix of what’s thriving and what we’re quietly negotiating with. Some years we overplanted. This year we tried to stay smaller and more honest about water and time. Winter already taught us that pipes and prep aren’t optional hobbies out here; those lessons are why a few of the first guides exist.

What we’re aiming for next

Late summer into fall is when the property gets honest with us. We want to pull more food through the garden and preserve what we can without turning the kitchen into a second job. Peter wants our power habits tighter before the days shorten — measuring use, not guessing. I want the water systems and seasonal prep further along than they were last year, even if that just means fewer scramble mornings.

We’re not planning to leave the grid this winter. We are planning to keep pushing: one project, one guide, one update at a time. Solar & Spruce is where we’ll leave the trail notes.
